Next 10 Minutes (unfinished)

Kevin: Junior high and high school students can be the toughest audience you'll ever get infront of cuz they just dont care.

Nick: The kids would be booing us

A.J.: Well it was just like is this, is this all we are gonna do? I mean what the hell? Is this it? Are we going to be stuck to being a middle school, high school act, or are we actually gonna get a record deal?

After six exhausting months, the Backstreet Boys had a small but growing fan base, and an audition with Mercury Records exec. Dave McPherson.

A.J.: We were in North Carolina, and we rented a conference room out to sing for him. And we sang a couple songs that were original and Dave was like wow, you know, these boys can sing, you know.

Dave: There were no groups like this that were really out on the market place at the time, and it just sounded really interesting.

But at the time radio was ruled by grung rock and ganster rap, and Dave could not convince Mercury to sign a sugary pop group. So in February 1994, he took the boys to Jive Records, a fledgling label that decided to take a chance on the group.

Barry: It was a risk, but it was a very calculated risk that we took.

Kevin: The fact that we had a major label that was willing to sign us, uh we were extatic.

First 10 Minutes

Everybody groove to the music. Everybody jam. Aaaaahh!

They began as anonymous American teens, and became a steamy obsession for five continents of fans.

A.J.: Girls would throw condoms, bras, panties... and some of them, I believe had just come off.

Nick: Hehe, it was ridiculous

Gifted, handsome, and hungry, the Backstreet Boys moved posters and pop albums ( )

But their relentless rise came at a terrifying price.

Howie: We were working like literally like 300 days of the year, and it just came to a point where he just couldnt handle it.

Leighanne: He was really scared, and to see him go down the hall you know, not knowing if he was gonna make it.

Brian: It was the hardest time I think in my life that I've ever been through.

Their fans though of the boys as clean cut kids, little knowing that one of the Backstreeters had been driven down a dangerous path.

Denise: ( ) He started looking gaunt.

A.J.: At one point it was Jack Daniels, drugs, and porn on my bus. That was it.

Kevin: And I'm like you know what, I'm done with you, you're dead to me.

They'd made it to the top together, but one boy's torment threatened to drive them apart for good.

A.J.: My grandmother died when I was right into my coke beign, and you know, she died right there infront of me.

Howie: And I think that was the final turning point when A.J. just let it all go.

It's a shocking story you'd never expected to see. The Backstreet Boys Behind the Music.

All: And coming up next, more about the Backstreet Boys.

A.J.: In just a few minutes.

It's March 2005, and four years after the release of their last album, the Backstreet Boys are back... with a fresh mature sound and a hott new single called Incomplete.

( ) The fans old and new.

A.J.: It's a little scary right now because we feel like in some ways we have to kinda start all over again... we've been gone for so long.

Nick: Well a lot of our fans have grown up, and so have we.

The boys know their own act is a tough one to follow. One of the most successful pop groups of all time, they ( ) records world wide, and have inspired more squealing school girls than any band since the Beatles.

Keith: You see girls collapsing and crying. They are sitting there and they're shaking and they, they cant talk, they're trembling. I dont think in history there's been too many other things you can compare it to other than Beatle mania.

Johnny: Hotels hated us because there would be 300 kids in the lobby and we would come through and all mayhem would break out, but thats what it was all about.

Zena: They broke records, they drove girls crazy, they were selling out every single seat in these arenas, and just buckets of cash.

The boys were little more than kids when they entered a whirlwind that could be both exhilerated and frightening. In a ( ) they would endure more health scares and heartbreaks than pop stars twice their age.

Zena: The rewards are great, but the demands are huge. Make no mistake, the Backstreet Boys are paid, but they have not had an easy time with it.

A.J.: It's like hopefully nothing else bad will happen. You know, we've been through enough, so...

The boys' back story begins in January, 1978. When Alexander James McLean was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. Raising in modest circumstances A.J. was facing diversity at age 2 when his parents divorced and his father walked out of his life.

Denise: It was a real bad situation for A.J. because his father would say he was gonna come over, and he wouldn't show up. And that got to be a little traumatic for A.J. as a child.

A.J.: My grandmother was my second mother you know. And she was my everything, you know. All I remember was my mom and my grandparents. That was it.

Encourage by his mom and grandmother, Alex escaped into a fantasy world as a stage performer. By the time he was 12 he had acted in over 70 plays and had become a ( )

A.J.: I was obsessed with puppets.

Denise: He started incorporating it into routines so that when he went to talent shows he has something that was unusual to show that would kinda seperate himself from the other people. It worked.

By 1992, 14 year old A.J. was a regular at the audtions at the theme parks and movie studios in Orlando, where he soon met another hungry young performer named Howie Dorough.

A.J.: ( ) at auditions and we just became friends.

Howie: He had like a hat and glasses and he had this little puppet routine that he was doing. I'm like who was this little pipsqueak up there?

A native of Orlando, Howie was the youngest of five kids in a devout Catholic family. At the age of 4 he had been bitten by the show biz bug, and was soon addicted to the attention of fawning females.

Howie: And I remember the girls were like oooh Howie and they would come over and I was like wow, I can get up on stage, do my thing, have girls around, and it all started from there.

Pollyanna: He'd get attention, and he's still getting it.

In July of '92, Howie and A.J. spied an ad in an entertainment circular that had been placed by an entrepeneur named Lou Perlman. The owner of a charter airline company, Perlman had no experience with music, but he was convinced he could make a killing with a new boy band.

A.J.: There was a article in there talking about a singing group with the New Kids On the Block look with the Boyz II Men sound.

Denise: They were looking for five boys between the ages of 12 and 18 at the time.

Howie and A.J. were the first two hires for the crooning quintet. The group was soon rounded by by a Florida native, Nick Carter and two Kentucky cousins and ex- choir boys named Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrel.

Brian: Now I was just scared half to death and I didnt know what I was getting myself into.

Kevin: My mentality was if we could be a white version of Boyz II Men and we show them our vocal ability, then thats all that matters.

Taking the name the Backstreet Boys the five quickly discovered an infectious mix of pop, blues, and balladry. Holding down part time jobs by day, they toiled on their routine after hours, perfecting their moves in the cavernous warehouses of Lou Perlman's company, Transcontinental Airlines.

Howie: They were just big, with no air. I think they had some of the propellars from the blimps underneath it that they would be blowing on us, trying to keep us cool.

Nick: We worked our butts off. Most of us have come from nothing, but whether or not people believe that or not, we worked.

In the summer of 1993, after months of rehersals and small time gigs, Lou Perlman finally send a demo tape to boy band veteran, Johnny Wright, former manager of New Kids On the Block.

Johnny: A video tape came to me of the Backstreet Boys at a SeaWorld show, and at first my attitude was been there, done that, didnt want to do it again, and until I had my first meeting with them and really heard that they could sing.

Johnny Wright signed on to manage the group, knowing they were a long way from a record deal. First they would have to find some fans, with a grinding cross country tour of dingy malls and high school hallways.

Denise: It was an old broken down crew bus that had seats, no bunks, barely had air conditioning and heat, and we literally went across the country, city to city, school to school.

Nick: We would go into all of these schools and the kids would be like this is a joke, right, this is a joke.

Topless Golfing!

I got the Backstreet Boys' new album, Never Gone today!! There aren't any really fast songs like their previous albums, but it is amazingly good music. I was listening to their music against NSYNC's and there is absolutely no comparison. I can't believe I was ever an NSYNC fan.. they suck! Anyway, so I was watching the flip side of the CD that is a DVD. It has the Behind the Scenes of the Incomplete music video. OMG!!! These guys are soooooo funny!! A.J. is the most hilarious person on Earth!!! You would think that him being the tough ex- druggie and tattooed that he wouldn't be playful, but you're so wrong. Sometimes he even acts... metrosexual... like TOPLESS GOLFING!!! You just have to see it!! I love A.J.!

The new blog name is Larger Than Life
^... just explaining the Backstreet Boys and the title of one of their songs
My name is now Johnny No Name
^when A.J. started trying to be unique he did a couple independent shows as Johnny No Name. he'd dress up as a pimp and then sing rock... how mysterious

Oh and I watched Behind the Music: The Backstreet Boys for the 5th time today. Its on tomorrow too.

Backstreet's Back Alright!!

... yes they are, atleast in my world. So I've been loving the Backstreet Boys this past week... especially A.J.!!! I've listened to Everybody and Incomplete a million times, and am still not sick of it... this could be going somewhere. I watch the Incomplete music video everyday and rewind it to the A.J. parts. He has a really good voice... probably the best I've ever heard. Don't worry, I've only watch Behind the Music: The Backstreet Boys 3 times, but it is on tomorrow at 11:30. I'm considering giving up Junior Zoologist camp and a phone to go to their concert here in Cincy on August 16th. Oh by the way... A.J. is really really hott in The Call music video. For me not many people can pull off facial hair, but his is down right sexy!!

"We all try to be as real as possible and stay true to who we are." - A.J. McLean

and here's some of the lyrics that A.J. sings alone in Incomplete...

Empty spaces fill me up with holes
Distant faces with no place left to go
Without you
Within me
I cant find no rest
Where I'm going is anybody's guess

Voices tell me I should carry on
But I am swimming in an ocean all alone
Baby, my baby
It's written on your face
You still wonder if we made a big mistake

I don't mean to drag it on, but I can't seem to let you go

Alone!

And That Makes You Larger Than Life!

Monday and Tuesday have been pretty cool. I went to work with Meredith. We volunteer at the zoo, helping the interns at the camps. I have a calm group, while Mere's is out of control... lol play time with Jared! There are two other helpers in my group. One is Katie. We are like twins and do everything the same. She is totally awesome. Then there's Austin. He says he's 14 and I would believe it with the height, but he acts like a 5 year old and is totally weird. So then we walked around and that was cool. After I had to go to cheerleading. It was ok. I got someone dropped on me, but hey... I sacrificed my back to her knees.

So I'm totally caught up in the Backstreet Boys. I dont know what it is about AJ!, Nick, Kevin, Howie, and Brian, but I just love them! And that makes you Larger Than Life!!!... love that song!!!... and the music video is to die for!!!

Yeah, work today. I went with Jimmy to buy some Star Wars action figures... ok I guess. I argued with my parents about getting me a phone... just cuz... threatening to run away is fun!

Me, You, and Zoboomafoo

So incredibly bored!!! Not the best two days to start the summer. Yesterday was diving... the only good part was that I'm gonna get private lessons with Amy and Dave. Maybe I'll have some complex dives this year. Nothing after that. Then Sarah and I went to the pool. We were in the water for 15 minutes and then theres thunder. It starts storming and we stayed in the bathroom for a while. It was pretty awesome listening to the thunder, when you're practically outside. Well then she had to go home to see a movie... haha which I watched at home. Fell asleep downstairs watching The Cosby Show. At 1:00 today we went to the zoo. The Kratt brothers were there. I absolutely love Chris and Martin!! They are my heroes!!! It was pretty cool, even though I had already seen the exact same show 3 years ago. I was hoping it would be geared towards Be the Creature, their new show on the National Geographic channel, but it was more of Zoboomafoo... which is still pretty cool. Later.

Graduation...

Yesterday was obviously graduation. I actually liked my dress... even the pinkness. The shoes were frikin killing me!... but I was told various times that I wasnt one of the people who looked like they were gonna fall over. Then the nastiest thing ever happened when they were about to take the picture. Even though my dress could not be pulled up any Rosie goes, "Honey, thats a little cut down too far." Then she sticks her hand down me dress and pulls it up! That PERV!!!!! And I told her to not touch me ever again, and she kept grabbing me!! Its so disgusting. Someone get her away from me! But so graduation was was fun. I had Barrett and Andrew Sommerville around me... and they are like the funniest people ever! At the reception I couldnt help but crying. I saw all the guys together in their suits for a picture. They all looked really handsome. Things are never gonna be the same... So then most of the day I went to the other schools to my brother's party, and to visit teachers and stuff. The graduation party was actually pretty cool. At the end I was hanging out with the guys. I have soooo much fun with them! Anyone want a picture of Alan's butt?... lol! Could you stop grabbing my balls?!?! That was starting to look really wrong... yeah Alan and Asif are awesome! Yo! I'm a ho!.. pop it like its hot... Scott is the best nerd pimp ever! I'm really gonna miss him!... and I'm really gonna miss Annie!! The best memories...

INCOMPLETE

Today was one of the funnest days ever, but probably the most stressful. We had the science final first. It was terribly easy, but I didnt have enough time to write anything good. Then was the math exam. I had memorized every frikin thing about the study guide, yet none of that was on there. The problems were Wicked Hard! I had to mark a bunch of random ones for the multiple choice and didnt finish most of the other part. Alan, Annie, Asif, and me then skipped class and ate lunch outside. Orchestra was ok. We watched Brother Bear, a very good movie, and then I talked to Mr.Browning and Elaine about switching to bass. Health was pretty interesting. That case with Marcus and the hick is really sad. Her and her lawyers are such IDIOTS!!.. cuz you know thats what the new football drills are. Use your elbows and foot to unbuttons someone's jeans and pull them down while you're holding their hands. I would really like to try lol. After school was terribly awesome. Annie, Alan, and me walked around the high school. Then we hid from Rosie... Alan immitating her skirt. I then very slyly ran through the bushes so that Rosie couldnt see me lol... that was funn! Alan rapped me up in the tape from a minicassette. Annie, Scott, Alan, Alina, and me walked to the elementary school to see Mr.Wells... well he only thought I was coming... SURPRISE!! That was SOOO COOL!!!! We had such good memories in that class... the best ever!!! We are such freaks... showing him homestarrunner. I'm going to miss you guys sooooo muuccchhh!!!!! Like more than anything I've ever missed before!!! Seriously, I cant help but crying every night thinking that Annie and Scott are leaving and our group is going to be split... love y'all! Diving was hilarious. The manager caught Danny trying to push Dave, our coach off the board, and so he hugged him instead. It was really really funny!! Then I went to Jimmy's game. My boyfriend lol was there! The other IH team was being so rude. I only feel sorry for Chad Rolfes cuz he got hit straight in the stomach with a foul ball. I feel even worse for Austin. He had a major injury, worse than his big bloody nose. While catching he got hit in the NUTS!! Aaaww poor bear. So yeah we won cuz we're awesome!! And Jimmy had the game winning hit! I had sooo much fun there. Then me and my bro watched Queer Eye for the Straight Guy... awesome show: Red Sox episode. That was pretty cool. So... this week is so depressing... As the Backstreet Boys said... Without you all I'm going to be is INCOMPLETE.

NICK!!!

Today was soooo cool. I brought some pictures to school. Aaawww it was little Daniel and Scott!!! They're so cute in that picture. Then there was my blackmail picture. It was Jimmy in my leotard, hat, and scarf, and doing some showgirl pose. It's really scary... lol! Health was actually kinda fun. We got to do the test with partners... or half the class. Emily Tomlin came over after school. We went to her house for awhile. Taylor thinks its amazing when he sees me... weird. And we looked for a picture of little Alan and Chris Cowens at boy scouts... when they were little and cute... without shirts on... aaaahhhh!!... naw jk. Yes, I think that we were all cute when we were little, in one way or another. We watched Jimmy at diving. He practically did a two and a half. We classified Emily Gayman as an Elephant Seal... how she gasped for breath like one of those opening its mouth, and these 5 foot wide things plunging into the water... eeewww it was gross. Then Emily tried to avoid her when she came over to us, so she kept going under water like a million times, and finally the big thing went away. I had diving and it was ok... Danny is still hilarious! At the pool with Emily was crazy! This was one of our conversations. We were in the deep end and I was holding onto the wall and she did a flip. While coming up she grabbed my leg. Me: "Why did you grab my leg?" Emily: " There's nothing else down there. Who else am I supposed to grab?!" Woah! Then she like swam on top of this dad and I pulled her arm and she was like Holy Crap! Let's see... then omg I played with NICK!!! He's like the coolest person ever! He remembered me!! yay!!! Then Chris Duncan, Nick's brother thought that I was following him, so he started chasing me and that was so fun!! Like all of Jimmy's friends were there... my little 3rd grade guys. Jordan is Emily's lover lol! We kept calling all of their names a million times. We called Nick's like so much, that he gave up and started talking to us. He is sooo cute!!!, and nice, and the coolest 5th grader!!!... love that boy!! I swam with Matt some too. The second time we walked there someone was out in Cowens' back yard. We thought it was Chris so she was about to yell fag or effe you really loud, but good thing I caught her... it was Mr.Cowens. So yeah... today rocked! Except for this... Josh Young, he's 3, was sharpening a stick with a pocket knife and practically slit his finger off!!

I frikin Love The OUTSIDERS!!!
Dally is THE HOTTEST!!!!

The Finger Game

Jimmy got a double! Yeah he's the only one on the team to have it at the moment. My dives were pretty bad today, maybe cuz it was so cold out that Danny was freezing his balls off!!! I found Danny and Fitz quite awkward today. Fitz was doing the Lil John thing- "Whaaat?!! Okaaaay!" and "Yeaye!" Danny was like "Fitz you be quiet and move that way"... finally someone tells him. At school Annie and me skipped lunch to set up our project. I just raided Ms.D's room and looked through peoples' projects. Chris, you do not teach 2nd graders The Finger Game!... its just too early boys. Then in creative writing we hung out with Logan. That kid is soooo cool!! Annie said that a priest said that God is even with you when you're horny. Doesnt that mean there's a third person in the room? At cheerleading, that was supposed to be a tumbling day, we had this gay substitute because Sean is in Florida. His name was Ray, he helped nothing, we did nothing, and he treated us like 2 year olds... no worse than that. I couldnt stand him! Now I'm working on my Me Portfolio. I actually like this stuff, except for the fact that she like just assigned it. One more thing, at the end of the day when we were in the library I sneaked over and watched part of the 8th grade graduation slide thing. They showed our Kindergarten class pictures where I was wearing a dress and I started frikin crying... I'm really gonna miss this.

Danny You Are So Cocky!!!

Not too much to say today. Attended to some secret business after school. Then me and Sarah went to cheerleading fittings. That was pretty pointless considering I've been fitted a million times for other squads just recently, but it was all good because I got to hang out with the bestest gurl ever... Sarah! An upside to cheerleading is that Mrs. Meurer is there!!! Seriously y'all, she is like the best coach/mentor you could ever have. Came home and worked out for awhile before going to diving. While I was watching Jimmy it was somewhat quiet... well Chris wasnt there. Then out of Danny's constant mouth comes another familiar, LOUD voice. Omg it was frikin Fitz. I like havent seen that boy in ages. So then I had diving practice. Only again fun... Danny you are so cocky!! Got a new twisting back dive thing... pretty sweet, like my kick butt coach, Dave. Eh, get yo FREAK ON!
